After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter, Astrid, accidentally opens the portal to the afterlife. Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux, and Monica Bellucci share why filming Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice was an experience they’ll never forget. Tim Burton has said that the film would only be made if Michael Keaton reprised his role.

I’ll admit, I went into this movie with absolutely no expectations, anticipation, or nostalgia for the first movie

I wasn’t sure if it would be a movie for me, but as the movie opened, the camera panned across the land and the dark but light music was playing, I thought I might enjoy it. In fact, the music and soundtrack were one of the highlights, even if it was less Joker and more Adams Family. We’re introduced to a lot of fun and quirky characters, old and new, including three generations of the Deetz family, but I like that the film doesn’t just repeat the first one.
It was wacky, funny at times, and beautiful
For example, while Lydia Deetz was quirky and sympathetic to the paranormal in the original film, her daughter Astrid, played by Jenna Ortega, is skeptical of all things ghost while still managing to give off some Wednesday Adams vibes. When you think about it, the story naturally had to take a new direction while incorporating the afterlife. While the story can be over-the-top and predictable in places, it’s fine the way it is, but it left itself with a lot to work with as it approached its 1 hour and 45 minute runtime. Overall, I had a fun and better-than-expected time with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and I think it can attract new fans.
If you liked the first one, will you like this one?
I can’t say, but I wish it had been released closer to Halloween, as it would have allowed for a little fun and spooky moments.
