Author Gary Dauberman told Den of Geek in June 2019 that his goal with the new version of Salem’s Lot is to make vampires scary again

The author returns to his hometown of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book, only to find that the town’s residents are under attack by a bloodthirsty vampire. It seeks to move away from the sexier, more romantic undead that have plagued popular culture over the past quarter century, from Interview with the Vampire to Twilight to The Vampire Diaries. When Ben reads old newspapers on microfilm at the library, the headline reads “Local Couple Victims of Drunk Driving.” The newspaper was reportedly printed in 1956, at a time when the term “DUI” was not yet in use.
The film had some good scary moments

The acting was solid, but the plot was rushed, and what I will never understand is the creators felt the need to rewrite one of the best writers of our time.
Barlow’s makeup was beautifully done, though, so that’s something special
Too many plotlines were left out and others were oddly crafted. I just wish that if the story had been properly developed, it would have become a proper series. Also, the Marsten house murder storyline could use some time, as it’s a great subplot and explanation for why Barlow and Straker chose that house/location.
Do movies still test audiences?
